Under the Full Moon: Celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival with Kaohsiung

Tulsa Global Alliance’s Kaohsiung Sister City Chair, Rex Burnett, hosted a Mid-Autumn Festival celebration at South Tulsa Chinese Church, where students and parents from the local Chinese Language Institute gathered to share in this beloved East Asian tradition.

The Mid-Autumn Festival, also called the Moon Festival, is one of the most important holidays in Chinese and Taiwanese culture. It falls on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month, when the moon is at its brightest and fullest. Across East Asia, families celebrate by sharing mooncakes, lighting lanterns, and spending time together under the moonlight.

About 50 to 60 people attended the Tulsa event, enjoying traditional Chinese food, tasting mooncakes, crafting colorful lanterns, and listening to classic legends like Chang’e (嫦娥) and the Jade Rabbit, who are said to live on the moon.

Events like this celebrate cultural traditions and bring Tulsa a little closer to Kaohsiung, Taiwan, our Sister City since 1980.
