Godzilla 70th Anniversary Event with Professor Godzilla, Bill Tsutsui!

Saturday, November 16th. 2:00pm

Celebrate 70 years of the King of the Monsters with a special screening of the film that started it all! Presented with community partner Circle Cinema and special guest Bill Tsutsui, PhD. Bill is the author of “Godzilla on My Mind: Fifty Years of the King of Monsters” as well as numerous books and essays on modern Japanese history. Bill will introduce the screening and lead an informal discussion afterwards, providing historical context to the Godzilla franchise and exploring the impact of the monster in Japan and around the world.

Plus, come early to enjoy complimentary light appetizers from JINYA Ramen Bar in the lobby before the film! Snack on those while you learn more about Tulsa Global Alliance, then get some popcorn before the main feature.

About the film: “Godzilla” (a.k.a. “Gojira”) is the roaring granddaddy of all monster movies. It’s also a remarkably humane and melancholy drama, made in Japan at a time when the country was reeling from nuclear attack and H-bomb testing in the Pacific. Its rampaging radioactive beast, the poignant embodiment of an entire population’s fears, became a beloved international icon of destruction, spawning almost thirty sequels.

About Bill Tsutsui: Bill Tsutsui is an award-winning scholar and teacher who currently serves as Chancellor and Professor of History at Ottawa University in Kansas. An expert in Japanese economic, environmental, and cultural history, Bill is a lifelong fan of Godzilla and his book “Godzilla on My Mind” has been called a “cult classic” by the New York Times. He is highly opinionated about BBQ, proud to have once driven the Zamboni at an NHL game, and slightly embarrassed to be Level 40 in Pokemon Go. Learn more about his work at BillTsuTsui.com.
