Godzilla 70th Anniversary Event Recap

On November 16 2024, Tulsa Global Alliance and our Community Partner, Circle Cinema, joined together to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Godzilla with a SOLD OUT screening of the original 1954 film, in Japanese with English subtitles. Dr. Bill Tsutsui, Chancellor and Professor of History at Ottawa University in Kansas, came to Tulsa to introduce the movie, answer questions, and provide lively commentary with an engaged audience after the film.

Bill is an award-winning historian and teacher, frequent public speaker and media commentator on Japanese culture, and the world's foremost expert on Godzilla. He has published a book on Godzilla as a Japanese cultural phenomenon, and he focused on what Godzilla symbolizes in Japanese culture, Japan's national experience, and Japanese film industry. The sold out theater was packed with nearly 200 people in the audience. They enjoyed the film and Bill's commentary so much that many didn't want to leave! Many stayed afterwards in the Circle Cinema gallery to talk to Bill about Godzilla and Japan.

Tulsa Global Alliance is very grateful to Bill Tsutsui, Circle Cinema for hosting our celebration and showing the film, and to JINYA Ramen Bar for providing delicious appetizers for the reception.
