Doing Business with Taiwan: A Virtual Program Connecting Taiwan and the U.S.

On May 3, Tulsa Global Alliance hosted a virtual program focused on doing business with Taiwan, bringing together trade officials, economic development leaders, and business executives from Taiwan and North America. The session explored U.S.-Taiwan business relationships, supply chain considerations, and the experiences of Taiwanese companies operating in North America. The event was presented by Tulsa Global Alliance in partnership with the Tulsa–Kaohsiung Sister City Partnership and organized by TGA Vice Chair of International Business Jazi Hiriart.

Bob Lieser, representing Tulsa Global Alliance, opened the program by welcoming participants and highlighting TGA’s mission to build global community through Sister City relationships, international exchanges, global education, and business engagement. He noted Tulsa’s long-standing Sister City partnership with Kaohsiung, Taiwan, which began in 1980 and continues to foster collaboration across education, culture, and economic development.

Introductory remarks were also provided by Jennifer Springer, Business Development Director for the Oklahoma Department of Commerce, who shared Oklahoma’s perspective on international trade and the value of global partnerships to the state’s economic growth.

Representatives from the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Houston offered an overview of Taiwan’s economic landscape and its trade relationship with the United States. Robert Lo, Director General of TECO Houston, provided context on Taiwan’s global engagement, followed by Benjamin Hsu, Director of Economic Affairs, who discussed Taiwan’s response to COVID-19, supply chain resilience, and emerging business opportunities.

The program also featured perspectives from Taiwanese companies operating in North America. Der-Shiu Jong, Senior Manager of Business Development at Aerospace Industrial Development Corporation, shared insights into Taiwan’s aerospace industry and international collaboration.

Alex Liao, President of the Taiwanese Chamber of Commerce in El Paso and General Director of ERIMX North America, discussed cross-border business operations and manufacturing experience in the U.S. and Mexico. Phil Huang, Chief of America Service Business for SMS InfoComm Corporation, spoke about global service operations and efforts to extend the lifecycle of technology products and reduce electronic waste.

The session concluded with a moderated question-and-answer period, allowing participants to engage directly with speakers. Tulsa Global Alliance thanked attendees for joining and encouraged continued connection through future programs, social media, and TGA communications.
